How to Help the Pets in Your Community

No matter where you live, there are many pets in your community that need help. Some are homeless. Some abandoned. Some abused.

Fortunately, there are many ways to lend a hand to these pets. From launching your own organization to volunteering at local charities, you can transform the lives of pets in need. And it can be thoroughly rewarding for you as well! If you’re not sure where to start, consider these tips and resources from Mon Petit Chew Chew:

Start a Nonprofit

Let’s start with the most ambitious idea here—starting your own nonprofit organization! Why not?

  • Research your local area to see if there’s a specific type of pet nonprofit that could benefit your community the most.

  • Purchase an LLC online and secure your tax-exempt status at the federal level.

  • Choose a name that reflects your mission, and establish short- and long-term goals.

  • Form a board of directors, create a business plan, and start promoting your brand.

Work with Local Organizations

Let’s say you’re not quite ready to go all-in on your own nonprofit. Chances are there are several agencies in your area that need help fulfilling their missions.

  • Begin a recurring donation to a local organization that cares for abandoned, homeless, and abused animals.

  • Offer to start and manage a social media page for a local pet adoption agency.

  • Volunteer at a local shelter or your city animal welfare department.

  • If you struggle to get connected with locally founded agencies, reach out to the closest Humane Society to inquire about volunteering.

Other Ways to Help

Starting a nonprofit, volunteering, and donating are not the only ways you can help pets in need. Try these strategies:

  • Raise funds for local animal rescues and veterinarian costs.

  • Spread awareness about animal cruelty by wearing apparel, posting online, and recruiting others to join the cause.

  • Sponsor or adopt a shelter animal yourself!

  • Host a community event that supports a local animal shelter.

If you’re feeling the nudge to help abandoned, homeless, and abused pets in your community, now is the time to act. Consider launching your own nonprofit, getting involved with local agencies, or finding other ways to contribute to the mission of providing local pets with a loving home. It’s one of the best feelings you’ll ever have!
