The Big Five: Milo the Toller

When our friend Muggsy mentioned we might have a kindred spirit in Milo the Toller, we were stoked to reach out to the very cute puppers and learn more about their youtube series, Drooling for Treats, and how Milo found his fam. Here are the big five questions with Milo’s mom, Jen.

Tell us a little bit about Milo
and how he joined your family.
(this counts as two Qs)

Milo is a two-year-old Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever. He’s very fun loving and super smart. I adopted Milo through the breeder of my first dog. I had another toller, Boden, who I was super close to and when his life was coming to an end I was devastated. I knew I couldn’t live without a dog.

So I reached out to Boden’s breeder. She told me she had a friend in Northern California that had a littler, but she wasn’t sure if there were puppies left. It turned out she had one puppy left. I was excited that this puppy was Boden’s nephew. (Boden’s dad, is Milo’s Grandfather) I went and met her at half way point in Arroyo Grande, where she was going to drop off another puppy to a family. It was love at first sight! He was the cutest little puppy.

Milo and one of his brothers were both the smallest of the litter. The breeder kept the other little brother. She said those two brothers were her favorite and they were the smartest of the litter. She is right! They are ridiculously smart! Even though it is a long-distance from my home, we’ve gone back to see her and Milo’s brother, mother, and Grandmother.

What’s your favorite part about
being a dog parent?

My favorite part about being a dog parent is all the time Milo and I get to spend together. I’ve been lucky enough to be able to bring him to work periodically. I love teaching him new tricks, going on hikes with him, and just having a snuggle buddy. He enjoys the challenge of learning new tricks. He’s a real people pleaser!

Tell us about “Drooling for Treats” and what made you start it?

“Drooling for Treats,” is a cooking show where Milo makes dog treats for other dogs. So far he’s made mint breath treats, donuts, and a carrot cake. I edit reality TV shows for a living and always love working on food shows. So I thought, why not bring what I love to do together. Dogs, food, and editing!

The show has been so fun to make! I work with my friend Troy Waters and the two, or should I say 3 of us work together to make the show. I teach Milo new tricks for the show all the time. In an upcoming episode, Milo has learned to open the cabinet, pull out a spatula, and then close it. It’s the cutest thing! He learns new tricks so fast it blows my mind!

What's your fave tip about cooking for dogs?

Somehow Milo knows when I’m cooking something for him. He sits waiting for a little taste of the dough. Milo’s tip would be to add cheese or peanut butter to whatever you are making. Those are his two favorite things!

Some of the most important parts of pet parenthood are our memories, moments, or celebrations together. It could be adopting a pet and starting a life together, or the heartbreak when you must say goodbye. You can share your story by drafting it yourself, or hit me up to interview you.
