As soon as I heard about Fedex employee, Daniel Nava, bringing his pups on his route when their doggy daycare closed, I knew I had to reach out and ask him the big five. They’ve since returned to their daily routine, but I still wanted to know more about these bubs.  Follow the dynamic duo on instagram.

Tell us a little bit about how
you came to be the pet parent
of Chorizo and Cocoa.

About two years ago we tried adopting or rescuing a Dachshund but there weren’t any in the area. We eventually found one on Craigslist, and when we met the lady, she pulled him out of an Albertsons bag! Right then we knew we had to get him, we couldn’t let him go back into that bag. So he came home with us, and later that evening he was named Chorizo. Cocoa came to us from a friend of my mother-in-law -- her Dachshunds had a larger than normal litter.

Are the two similar?
What are their
personalities like?

Chorizo is very calm and easy going, Cocoa is a bit wilder and more rambunctious, she will bark at the wind. But they get along great, at this point in time they are inseparable.

Why did you start bringing
them along for the ride?

I first brought them with me when Cocoa was attacked by a coyote right outside our apartment, the coyote attacked her while my wife was walking her on a leash. Luckily a neighbor was nearby and helped scare off the coyote. While she was on recovery, we didn’t want to take her to daycare and risk her getting hurt. The first few times [she rode with me], she would just stay in the truck But eventually she started running with Chorizo and I to deliver packages to the houses.

What's your fave part
about being a pet parent?

My favorite part about being a pet parent is watching them grow and develop their own little personalities. I love to watch them play and when they get tired it turns into snuggle o’clock.

Did FedEx make special
pupper jumpers for them!?
They're so cute.
We're glad they
let you bring them along.
how did that work out?

I made their uniforms out of old shirts from a previous contractor, They were okay with them [coming along] with me, however as always there are safety concerns. It’s no longer an issue as their daycare center is now open and they were happy to see their friends again! Every once in a while they might join me for a ride.

Some of the most important parts of pet parenthood are our memories, moments, or celebrations together. It could be adopting a pet and starting a life together, or the heartbreak when you must say goodbye. You can share your story by drafting it yourself, or hit me up to interview you.
